Frederic R. Furuya

Fred is one of the founders of Nanoprobes, and has worked at the Company since February 1994. He has a Ph.D. in organometallic chemistry from the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis and B.S. in chemistry from Brown University, Providence, RI. He directs the preparation of many of the items in our catalog, especially the colloidal gold conjugates: if you have a technical question about these, Fred is the best person to answer it.

Research Interests

Ultrasensitive Biosensors

In addition to their electron microscope visibility and ability to nucleate silver enhancement, gold cluster complexes possess other unique electronic and physical properties which could potentially form the basis for ultrasensitive detection methods and biosensors. Our research is direscted towards characterizing some of these properties, and developing the synthetic chemistry for incorporating these labels into systems such as electronic sensors and switches and biosensors.

Incorporation of labels into biopolymers

Because our probe labels are linked covalently, they can potentially be incorporated into any molecule with a suitable reactive chemical group. For example, gold clusters can be inserted into synthetic peptides and oligonucleotides during solid-phase synthesis by using gold-labeled monomers. This opens up numerous possibilities, such as incorporating highly visible tags selectively into combinatorial arrays, or the direct synthesis of labeled in situ hybridization probes.
